Edward Zwick will direct and co-write The Great Wall, an adventure movie about ... the Great Wall!
According to Legendary Entertainment -- whose newly formed Legendary East will handle distribution -- the movie "reveals the legend behind a great mystery of our age: why this magnificent structure came to be." It will be loosely based on a story co-written by Max Brooks, who wrote the book World War Z, which is currently one of the most buzzed-about upcoming movie adaptations.
Zwick is a movie and TV veteran whose resume includes films like The Last Samurai, Blood Diamond and Glory, as well as the beloved TV show thirtysomething. He most recently directed the Jake Gyllenhaal/Anne Hathaway romantic dramedy Love and Other Drugs.
