Favreau not directing Avengers movie

Jon Favreau has turned down the chance to direct The Avengers for Marvel Studios. The comic book movie will feature several major Marvel characters including Iron Man, the Hulk and Captain America and is due out in 2012.

The Iron Man director was expected to take charge of the classic superhero collaboration, but will serve as executive producer instread.

Favreau told Access Hollywood, "They'll have to (find a different director). It's something I'm being the executive producer on, so I'll definitely have input and a say. But I will not be available (for the job)."

The director is finishing up post-production on Iron Man 2 and is starting pre-production in Cowboys and Aliens.
