Ailing actress Farrah Fawcett was hospitalized because of abdominal bleeding, which is not directly linked to her battle with anal cancer, according to her doctor.
The former Charlie's Angels star, 62, checked into an undisclosed hospital in Los Angeles on Thursday – two and a half years after publicly disclosing her battle with the disease.
Her close friends and her longtime partner Ryan O'Neal have spoken out on her behalf to dismiss reports that the actress is fighting for her life.
Fawcett's doctor, Lawrence Piro, has now explained that the actress had abdominal bleeding and a hematoma (internal sac of blood), which she developed after undergoing aggressive alternative cancer treatments in Germany.
According to Piro, the actress is using a wheelchair as she recovers from the procedure, because she is in too much pain to walk.
Piro says, "It turned out that the procedure caused a small amount of bleeding in one of the muscles of her abdomen, making a hematoma, which was quite painful. That pain, which was coming from the hematoma, had nothing directly to do with the cancer.
"She remains in good spirits with her usual sense of humor. She's been in great shape her whole life and has an incredible resolve and an incredible resilience."
