HOLLYWOOD - Just when you thought it was safe to go out of the house....

Variety reports New Line Cinema has finally given the thumbs-up to get Freddy vs. Jason into production, with Brad Renfro signed to star. Of course, he'll play second banana to Robert Englund, who'll be playing Freddy Krueger for the eighth time. No one has been cast yet to play Jason Voorhees.

The story is pretty simple--the legendary killers will be pitted against each other, while Renfro (Deuces Wild) plays a character caught in the middle. His main job is to try to stay alive until the end.

"It's [a] clash of the titans, the ultimate showdown," New Line Production President Toby Emmerich told Variety. "Freddy is the intellectual manipulator, Jason the killing machine. When you have done 17 movies between these characters, it is hard to stay fresh, but putting these characters together makes it fresh. There is a hard-core fan base for each, and we will be out in front of Predator vs. Alien and Batman vs. Superman, other films pitting venerable characters against each other."

Ronny Yu (Bride of Chucky) will direct, with filming to begin Sept. 9 in Vancouver, British Columbia.
