French directors sign Polanski petition at Cannes

The Rosemary's Baby director is currently under house arrest at his chalet in Gstaad, Switzerland, where he's fighting extradition, following his arrest in Zurich in September (09). U.S. lawmakers want Polanski to return to America so he can be sentenced for having unlawful sex with a minor in 1977.

The Oscar winner fled America on the eve of his sentencing and has been living in exile in Europe ever since.

On Tuesday (11May10), several moviemakers showed their support for Polanski by signing a petition at the French film festival. They called on Swiss lawmakers to reject pressure from America, insisting "the U.S. request for extradition is based on a lie."

Among the signatories were Jean-Luc Godard, Agnes Varda, Bertrand Tavernier and Olivier Assayas.

On Monday (10May10), Polanski's legal fight was dealt another blow after a Los Angeles judge turned down a request for the testimony of the case's original prosecutor, retired Deputy District Attorney Roger Gunson, to be unsealed to help Swiss officials decide whether the director should be sent back to America.
