Gay Leaders Applaud Clay Aiken for 'Coming Out'

Clay Aiken
HOLLYWOOD - Clay Aiken's decision to 'come out' to People magazine has thrilled the nation's leading gay rights organization.

The singer, a new dad, has revealed he's gay in the new issue of the publication, declaring, "I cannot raise a child to lie or hide things," and officials at the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) are saluting Aiken for going public with his sexuality after years of speculation.

President Neil G. Giuliano says, "We congratulate Clay for making this decision and for setting an example for others and his family. As we’re seeing, more and more gay people, including celebrities, are living openly and honestly, and this has tremendous impact in terms of creating awareness, understanding and acceptance.”

And former 'N SYNC star Lance Bass, who 'came out' in People magazine in 2006, is also applauding Aiken for the big reveal and insists his fellow singer will appreciate that he's made the right decision in the months ahead.

Bass says, "Everyone's going to be very supportive and he's going to be the happiest he's ever been.”

Bass also says the decision might even boost his fan appeal: "I swear, when I came out, I had more female fans.”

Meanwhile, Simon Cowell, who judged Aiken on American Idol, insists the news is far from a shock to him.

The sarcastic music mogul says, "It’s like being told Santa Claus isn’t real. Unbelievable.”

Cowell adds, "Good for him... I don't think anyone cares (that Aiken is gay). Let's face it, it's 2008. Who cares?”
