HOLLYWOOD - Mel Gibson slicked his hair back before having his mugshot taken because he desperately wanted to avoid a snap like actor Nick Nolte's famously disheveled 2002 photo, taken after his own drunk-driving arrest in Malibu, California.
Gibson has given his first public interview since the night of his "insane," tequila-fuelled ordeal, which ended with him being arrested and making anti-Semitic remarks to police in July.
He tells newswoman Diane Sawyer on Good Morning America, "The first thing that went through my mind was Nick Nolte's photograph.
"So I did my best with a finger combing in the water fountain, to sort of like splash a little water on my face, to not take one of those hideous mugshots.
"Because I knew it would be around. So, vanity won out!"
The star admits he has always had to battle to suppress an inexplicable inner rage, saying, "I've been angry all my life... and I try not to have it manifest itself.
"I can get really mad... I can murder inanimate objects. You should see me choking the toaster in the morning."
