HOLLYWOOD - The Simpsons iconic score was almost never written--after composer Danny Elfman realized the cartoon's creator, Matt Groening, once gave his music band a bad review.
Groening was a rock critic in his youth and on one occasion had to review Danny Elfman's former band, Oingo Boingo--but his review didn't go down well with the celebrated film composer.
Groening says, "I used to be a rock critic many years ago. I once saw Oingo Boingo and I gave them a bad review. I outraged Danny Elfman so much that he actually wrote a letter to the editor of the paper.
"But when I did The Simpsons I wanted Elfman to do the score. And I thought, 'He will never remember'--and he remembered. He has forgiven me now."
