'High School Musical 2' Shatters TV Records

Zac Efron
HOLLYWOOD - Made-for-TV sequel High School Musical 2 has become the most-watched basic cable telecast after 17.2 million viewers tuned in to its Friday night broadcast on the Disney Channel.

The Zac Efron-starring sequel to the 2006 musical smash beat the previous record of 16 million viewers, set by ESPN's Monday Night Football in September 2006.

High School Musical 2 also broke the cable TV record for number of people watching an entertainment show, shattering the 12.5 million viewers who sat down for the 2001 premiere of TNT western Crossfire Trail.

It is also the most watched program in the six-to-11 age bracket, entertaining 6.1 million kids in that demographic.
