Jordin Sparks Joins Whitney Houston for 'Sparkle' Remake

In one of the more serendipitous casting decisions in recent history, Jordin Sparks has been chosen to play the title character in Sparkle, THR has revealed. Based loosely on the story of the Supremes, Sparkle is actually a remake of Sam O'Sheen's eponymous 1976 film, which starred Irene Cara, Lonette McKee and Dwan Smith. It is not to be confused with Dreamgirls, which was also loosely based on the story of the Supremes, and which also happened to star an American Idol alumnus, Jennifer Hudson.

Sparks who was crowned champion of American Idol's sixth season, joins a cast that includes Whitney Houston and Mike Epps. Salim Akil is slated to direct, based on a script by his wife Mara Brock Akil.
