Kazakh President Applauds 'Borat' Movie

Sacha Baron Cohen
HOLLYWOOD - Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev has made a dramatic u-turn over Sacha Baron Cohen's depiction of Kazakhstan, insisting he's now a huge fan of the British funnyman's comic creation Borat.

Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan has topped box offices around the globe with its portrayal of Kazakhstan as a country where incest is rife and people with special needs are kept in cages.

Nazarbayev was initially so outraged about what he heard of Borat's misrepresentation of his homeland, he called on President George W. Bush to intervene.

But he now admits he laughed throughout a screening of the movie, and is optimistic it will benefit the Kazakh economy.

He said during a visit to Britain yesterday, "This film was created by a comedian so let's laugh at it.

"There is no such thing as bad publicity. (People) will want to learn more and come to Kazakhstan to see for themselves."
