If you needed any more proof that the world is gaga for Lady Gaga, Twitter has the data to back it up. The "Born This Way" singer has surpassed a major milestone in online history by obtaining the highest number of Twitter followers over her fellow celebrities, making her virtually the most popular person on the planet -- virally speaking at least.
So how many followers does it take to become the most popular person of them all? Gaga has racked up over 20 million followers -- the first Twitter user to ever hit that major benchmark.
But there are plenty of other stars hot on her social media trail. Justin Bieber is the runner-up with 18.1 million followers, while Katy Perry has acquired a respectable 15.7 million, putting her ex-hubby, Russell Brand's 4.2 million followers to shame. Shakira's currently clocked in at 14.7 million, and Rihanna rounds out the top five with 14.5 million followers.
Surprisingly enough, one iconic celeb who doesn't seem to be "winning" at this Twitter popularity game is Charlie Sheen, who's only reached a little over 6.7 million followers. Granted, it's still impressive enough to be considered part of his comeback, but compared to these other top runners, his numbers pale in comparison.
Even America's favorite mean judge, Simon Cowell, has only earned a whopping 1.6 million followers. It appears he just doesn't have the Twitter X Factor.
