Malcolm Arnold Dies

HOLLYWOOD - Acclaimed British composer Malcolm Arnold has died in the hospital at the age of 84 following a chest infection.

Arnold, who won an Oscar for the musical score to the 1958 war movie Bridge on the River Kwai, was famous for film scores including Whistle Down the Wind and Hobson's Choice. He also composed seven ballets, nine symphonies and two operas.

Arnold, who died at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital in England, leaves behind two sons and one daughter.

Arnold's long-term friend and companion Anthony Day says Arnold was "the most wonderful man."

He adds, "People didn't see the man that I knew because he had frontal lobe dementia over the last few years which slowly developed but, being with him, he was a happy, lovely man who enjoyed his music and enjoyed his life."
