Mark Romanek Sought for Disney's 'Cinderella'

Mark RomanekMark Romanek, king of the music video, is being sought for the direction of Disney's Cinderella re-imagining. In addition to filming videos and documentaries for musicians including Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Madonna, David Bowie, REM, Weezer and Red Hot Chili Peppers, Romanek has also helmed feature films including One Hour Photo and Static.

Based on his past work, it's curious as to why Disney is so adamant about employing Romanek for the Cinderella film. This is not to discount the man's talent (clearly, he's very accomplished as a music video director), but he's never been attached to a mainstream, non-twisted movie. Then again, that could be indicative of the direction Disney plans to take this new Cinderella film in. Fairy tale adaptations are becoming darker and more "loosely translated." So I would say, get ready for a particularly interesting Cinderella.

The story follows the meeting and courting of Cinderella and the Prince, the latter of whom is already involved in an arranged marriage. The script comes from Aline Brosh McKenna, whose name is better than yours. (Brosh) McKenna also wrote Laws of Attraction, The Devil Wears Prada, and the upcoming zoo-buying movie We Bought a Zoo.
