HOLLYWOOD - Mel Gibson has been praised for his progress by a California judge following his arrest for driving under the influence last year.
The Braveheart star, 51, was arrested for drink driving on July 28 in Malibu, when he proceeded to verbally abuse arresting officer James Mee with anti-Semitic remarks.
In August 2006, Gibson pleaded no contest to misdemeanor drink driving charges and was sentenced to three years probation, a 90 day alcohol-abuse program and 12 months of Alcoholic Anonymous meetings.
Gibson's lawyer Blair Berk attended a Malibu court on Thursday where a judge announced Gibson was free to attend AA meetings on a voluntary basis, TMZ.com reports.
The actor/director is scheduled to appear in court for a further hearing on Feb. 15.
