Mel Gibson to Make Film About Jewish Revolutionary

Oh boy. In what has to be the oddest marriage of director and material since, well, ever, Mel Gibson is set to produce and possibly direct a film that will tell the story of Judah Maccabee, a Jewish warrior who led a famous revolt against Seleucid overlords in 167-160 BCE. (Back then, revolts were much more protracted events.) According to Deadline, the controversial actor-director "has long wanted to make this film about heroic Jews, and it was discussed even when he was under fire after his drunken anti-Semitic rant during a 2006 Malibu arrest." In only slightly less bizarre news, Joe Eszterhas (Showgirls, Basic Instinct) has been hired to pen the script. The Easter Bunny and Tooth Fairy are in talks to star.
