The remake of the 80’s horror-comedy Monster Squad has nabbed a pair of screenwriters. Cousin screenwriting duo Mark and Brian Gunn have signed on to write the script for the Platinum Dunes production.
The original Monster Squad tells the story of suburban horror fans who must face off against a group of cinema’s classic monsters. Rob Cohen is producing the film, along with Platinum Dunes' Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form.
I’m a bit hesitant to pass judgement on this one. The production company certainly isn’t encouraging, as Platinum Dunes specifically does nothing but remake horror films, and still can’t be damned to make them anything but obligatory and lazy. Rob Cohen's involvement is even more dubious, since his filmography mainly contains such wastes of film as xXx and the third Mummy film. And the screenwriters’ most prominent credits are the obnoxiously spelled 2gether and direct-to-DVD sequel Bring It On Again.
On the other hand, Cohen did direct Dragonheart earlier in his career, which had Sean Connery as a talking dragon, and Mark and Brian Gunn are responsible for the surprisingly funny web series PG Porn. So, okay, this isn’t much of a defense, since Cohen’s best film was 15 years ago and the Gunns have managed the incredibly easy task of making jokes about porn. But you never know, we might get lucky and have this turn out to be decent. Or we might get lucky and Platinum Dunes HQ will get hit with an asteroid and explode.
