Mummy Mia!

The Mummy Returns DVD release event
HOLLYWOOD - The Mummy Returns set a record for video sales and rentals in its first week in retail stores, taking in $90 million, Variety reported today. The figure surpassed the $68.1 million that the film earned during its opening weekend and is almost half what it took in during its entire domestic theatrical run ($202 million).

"This is just an explosion," Craig Kornblau, president of Universal Studios Home Video, told Variety. "This is significantly stronger than anyone at the studio expected."

The trade paper also observed that first-day sales of Snow White and a five-disc set of The Godfather on Tuesday, combined with continued sales of The Mummy Returns, could produce the biggest single-day video sales gross in history.
