NEWSMAKERS: 'M*A*S*H' Vet Dies

SANTA MONICA - Taps for Maj. Burns. Larry Linville, the actor who portrayed the whiny, sniveling, adulterous tentmate of the reputedly more-cool Hawkeye on TV's long-running Korean War comedy "M*A*S*H," died Monday of complications from cancer. He was 60.

Linville was hospitalized in New York on Sunday for pneumonia. He underwent surgery for lung cancer two years ago.

Linville co-starred on "M*A*S*H" from 1972-1977. His character was replaced by the equally whiny and sniveling Maj. Winchester (as portrayed by David Ogden Stiers). How to tell Burns and Winchester apart? Burns was the one who had the affair with Hot Lips (Loretta Swit); Winchester was the one who listened to records.

In death, Linville joins another late "M*A*S*H" vet, McLean Stevenson (deceased 1996).
