New in Blu: 'Due Date' and 'Megamind'

Fish Tank (Criterion, $24.99)

The Movie: I actually haven’t seen Fish Tank, which is an error I soon plan to correct thanks to Criterion putting it out on Blu-ray. But by all accounts that I’ve read, this 2009 British flick about a teenager dealing with her mother’s new boyfriend is a brilliant piece of modern filmmaking. Or to quote David Ehrlick, “It's swift kick in the ass that's every bit as uncouth and kinetic as it is poignant and enduring, an electric modern marvel that'll leave you breathless.”
The Features: Not a whole lot, actually, which is uncommon for most Criterion Collection releases, but it does contain some audition footage and cast/crew interviews.
Who Should Buy It: Fans of fearless cinema (I assume).
Middle Shelf
Due Date (Warner Brothers, $24.99)

The Movie: It’s clear why Due Date was made - Robert Downey Jr. and Zack Galifinakis on a road trip is instant box office success, right? - but I’m not too sure who exactly Due Date was made for. Its insipid Planes, Trains & Automobiles rip-off plot will only anger older viewers, yet what happens on said road trip is not quite debauched enough to win over the younger crowds that ate up the guy’s fantasy weekend that is The Hangover. Robert Downey Jr. plays a supremely unlikable and smug asshat, so I’m not sure why we’re supposed to care about him becoming a father. And Galifinakis is just a sitcom-ready caricature of the “I can make it in LA” stereotype.
Plus, it’s just not very funny.
The Features: A gag reel, some deleted scenes and a few other throwaway extras that are each under a minute long.
Who Should Buy It: I’d love to say anyone who loves Todd Phillips’ brand of comedy, but this is easily the least amusing thing he’s ever done.
