"Pearl Harbor" top grossing film worldwide

HOLLYWOOD - By having taken in a total of $430 million in ticket sales worldwide, Pearl Harbor has now become the top-grossing film of the year, Disney announced Tuesday. (The studio's effort to push the film past the $200-million mark domestically by widening its release last weekend brought another $867,300 into the coffers, pushing the gross-to-date to $196.7 million.) Although several analysts have suggested that the film's enormous budget, estimated at $145 million, plus huge merchandising and advertising outlays, are not likely to be recovered once exhibitors are paid off, Disney Motion Pictures Group chairman Dick Cook said Tuesday that the box-office result "is a great accomplishment by any measure."
