Polanski Finishing 'Ghost' From Jail Cell
Roman Polanski is putting the finishing touches on his forthcoming film from his prison cell in Switzerland, according to screenwriter Robert Harris, The Times of London reports.
Harris said the director is making decisions about The Ghost so that it will be ready for its scheduled premiere at the Berlin Film Festival in February.
Polanski is said to have recently given instructions about the film's score to Alexandre Desplat, the French composer who was Oscar-nominated last year for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
Harris told the Times that The Ghost would be completed in accordance with Polanski's wishes.
The director had finished editing the film, which stars Pierce Brosnan as a British prime minister accused of war crimes, on the day of his arrest, according to the report.
Harris said: "He can make his wishes known from his cell. I don't think he can make phone calls, but he can communicate. What people think of the film is another matter. Whether the film can rise above the circumstances in which the director now finds himself I don't know. We will test to the upper limits the notion that there’s no such thing as bad publicity."
Meanwhile, Polanski's French attorney said this week that the director felt that some of the support he had received since his arrest had not been "counterproductive."
Herve Temime told Agence France Presse that Polanski was "very touched by the support he has received," but, he added, "he also knows that some of it is counterproductive."
A petition that germinated in France, and which was first posted on Wiretap immediately following Polanski's arrest in Zurich, includes the signatures of many international filmmakers and industryites.
Here in Lyon, where I am attending the inaugural Festival Lumiere, the sentiment seems to be that something had to be done to protest the way in which Polanski was snatched by the Swiss authorities. There is also a feeling now that justice should run its course.
