Polanski Under House Arrest in Swiss Chalet

Director Roman Polanski at the set of his new movie
Embattled director Roman Polanski is holed up in his luxury Swiss chalet for the holidays after he was freed from jail and placed on house arrest.

The Chinatown filmmaker was thrown behind bars in Zurich in September following his arrest on a 32-year-old international sexual assault charge.

He posted $4.5 million bail on Thursday and was transferred to an undisclosed location for security reasons in the final hours before he was released.

Polanski was fitted with an electronic monitoring device and by Friday morning was back in the comfort of his own home in Gstaad, where he will serve out his days while he awaits possible extradition to America.

Authorities in California are keen to fly Polanski back to the U.S. to face justice.

The director, who pleaded guilty to having unlawful sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl at a Hollywood party, fled to France on the eve of his sentencing in 1978 and has lived in exile ever since.
