"Potter" profits match "Menace"

Harry Potter
HOLLYWOOD - Records were made to be broken...or at least tied.

After just five days in release, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone has surpassed the $100 million mark domestically, tying the previous record set in 1999 by Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace.

Potter has grossed an estimated $105 million thus far--as Menace did after five days in theaters--according to distributor Warner Bros., The Associated Press reports.

The film is also a sensation abroad. In England--where the movie was shot and premiered--Potter took in $23.7 million in just three days, an all-time record for the Brits.

The sequel to the film, titled Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, began shooting this week. It’s scheduled to premiere just before Thanksgiving 2002.
