ROLE CALL: Cruise, Crowe Together Again?

HOLLYWOOD - After scoring the biggest hit (so far) of the year in a movie that turns him into a fighting machine, Tom Cruise wants to reunite with the director that made him seem, well, human. According to today's Daily Variety, Cruise is in final negotiations to work again with Cameron Crowe, who actually persuaded Cruise to play a character with flaws in "Jerry Maguire."

No one's saying much about the project they'd make, other than that it's a love story. It would be made after Cruise finishes work on the sci-fi movie "A.I.," directed by Steven Spielberg, which hasn't even started shooting yet.

Meanwhile, Crowe's getting ready for the Sept. 15 release of "Almost Famous," his semi-autobiographical rock 'n' roll memoir.
