HOLLYWOOD - Russell Crowe was stunned when a New York cop handed him a cellphone followinghis arrest for phone throwing on June 6 and found a pal berating him
for not keeping in touch on the line.
The temperamental movie star lost his temper with Mercer Hotel clerk Nestor
Estrada during an early morning argument about Crowe's phone connection and
allegedly threw his room's telephone against a wall, which police say inflicted
minor injuries on Estrada's face.
Crowe was arrested and taken to a local police station, where he was put
behind bars, while they waited for him to be officially charged with second
degree assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
And, in his darkest hour, the actor was delighted to hear from a new York
pal, who somehow had convinced police contacts to get a phone to Crowe.
Crowe says, "A guy walks past and he sticks a cellphone through the thing
(bars), so I take the phone and I realize there's actually somebody on it.
"I'm like, 'Hello,' and it's this guy Tommy that I know, who knows somebody
in the precinct and has, like, rung and said, 'Hey, can you put me through to
Russell.'
"He says, `What you doin' in there? Man, c'mon, you're on the wrong side of
the bars, but how ya doin' anyway? I haven't seen you for a long time. Why
didn't you call when you got into town?
"It was actually kinda reassuring hearing a familiar voice on the phone."
But Crowe quickly regretted taking the call when he handed the cellphone
back, because he was informed he was only allowed one phone call in jail. He adds, "I didn't know it was an incoming one, I thought it was an outgoing
one."
