Sam Raimi is set to scare the crap out of us again.
The director, along with Mandate Pictures, just won the auction for the rights package for a new version of The Day of the Triffids -- the 1962 horror flick about killer plants for outer space (based on the same-titled book). The studio beat out Warner Brothers, who wanted Harry Potter helmsman David Yates to handle the project.
According to Deadline, the package includes the original sci-fi novel by John Wyndham, which was the basis of the 1962 film. The story is pretty normal paranoid alien activity stuff. Basically, the invaders cause a shower of meteorites that blinds 99% of Earth's population. And then, the meteorites release Triffids, a.k.a carnivorous plants (only in Hollywood) which are capable of moving around and murdering your blind ass.
Nothing is official yet, but Raimi hopes to direct. Supposedly, the original film was one of his favorites as a child. And honestly, who better to handle a horror movie than the man who brought us the Evil Dead series and Drag Me to Hell? Raimi knows how the genre works. But, I have one reservation. Does the idea of killer plants remind anyone else of The Happening? Ugh. Way to go M. Night, you've somehow managed to now ruin two movies with that film -- and perhaps more surprisingly, this one hasn't even been made yet!
