HOLLYWOOD - Martin Scorsese's chances of winning his first Oscar have been boosted after he landed the Directors Guild of America (DGA) award for The Departed yesterday.
The 64-year-old beat the directors of Babel, Dreamgirls, Little Miss Sunshine and The Queen to win his first DGA award after six previous nominations.
The prestigious prize is regarded as a reliable indicator as to who will win the Best Director Oscar, as the DGA winner has only failed to land the Oscar six times in the award's 58-year history.
Scorsese said, "I didn't think I'd be standing here tonight. I was just trying to make a good picture. I don't know (about the Oscar). It's good to have a nomination."
