The world has lost one of Hollywood's sweetest grandmothers. The New York Times has reported that Frances Bay -- born Frances Goffman -- died Thursday in Los Angeles at the age of 92 years old. Bay's cousin, Marly Zaslow, confirmed the character actress' death and stated that she died as a result of complications from pneumonia.
Bay began her career as a radio star, but left the industry to marry and start a family. After making her debut at a very late age in life with a small part in the comedy Foul Play in 1978, she worked in both films and TV shows alike and appeared in more than 150 projects. While she's best known as the woman on Seinfeld who battled Jerry for a loaf of marble rye bread, I personally remember her as Happy's lovable grandmother in the hilarious comedy film, Happy Gilmore. In fact, she frequently portrayed eccentric, elderly women and kind hearted grandmothers in all kinds of flicks and television programs. Bay was last seen in a recurring role on ABC's The Middle as recently as this year. So cute and tiny, you couldn't help but fall in love with her. I guess the saying is true -- good things do come in small packages. RIP Frances, you will be missed!
