Sheree North Dead at 72

HOLLYWOOD - Actress Sheree North has died at Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. She was 72.

The famous platinum blonde 1950s pin-up, real name Dawn Bethel, made her name as a studio glamour girl who could substitute for Marilyn Monroe but went on to achieve stardom in her own right with a series of movies and beloved TV roles.

Born in 1933, she started her showbusiness career as a dancer before branching out into movies when she starred in Excuse My Dust in 1951, opposite Red Skelton.

Among her biggest films were The Shootist, in which she starred opposite John Wayne, and The Outfit.

On TV, she was famous for portraying Lou Grant's girlfriend on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and appeared on countless US variety shows, such as The Bing Crosby Show and Toast of the Town.

North also became a Seinfeld regular late in her career when she played Kramer's mother Babs.
