Sundance 2012: Bradley Cooper Faces Some Harsh 'Words' in New Poster

I know a few things about The Words. I know that it has wrangled an impressive cast including Bradley Cooper, Zoe Saldana and Jeremy Irons. I know that it focuses on a failing writer's theft and plagiarism of a renowned author's lost works. I know that its writing/directing team of Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal are newcomers to the filmmaking game, but show some solid potential with this introspective story. I know all this; and most of all, I know that its new poster is a metaphor. However, I don't know for what. But you look me in the eye and tell me that a man's face—no, a writer's face—double-no, a dishonest and troubled writer's face—constructed of phrases like "Erase the past," "I'm sorry," and the mysterious "It was just supposed to be this"—is not intended to be some grand metaphor.

Cooper plays a down-and-out writer who happens upon the unpublished manuscript of a famed novelsit (Irons) inside a piece of antique luggage purchased for him by his wife (Saldana), and then passes it off as his own. Beyond the surface value malfeasance of plagiarism, The Words looks to explore the very idea of passing off someone else's words and ideas as your own, and how they will translate quite differently coming from a different source. Very interesting stuff. Lots of room for more metaphors (I'm really into metaphors today).

The Words will premiere at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. Click here to check out our official festival hub.
