Because anything that slightly, maybe, obliqulely mentions The Dark Knight Rises is news, we'd be remiss if we didn't at least bring your attention to a wee bit of tizzy happening around the interwebs today. A YouTube account with the same name -- The Fire Rises -- as the Twitter account responsible for releasing this image of Tom Hardy's Bane just released two videos of grainy footage presented as a teaser for the film.
The first is a Gotham City News report featuring Anthony Michael Hall as our trusty reporter, speaking over firey images and a bar at the bottom teasing "Arkham Breakout?" and flashing the URL for the fake Facebook page for Matthew Modine's character, who is rumored to be a politician by the name of Nixon. The second contains footage of prisoners and the haunting chanting track that is the only bit of content on The Dark Knight Rises official movie site at the moment. So, what's the deal?
Well, the big question is are these videos for real? Are they a bit of guerilla marketing on Warner Bros' part or is this the work of a few wiley, overzealous fans? On one hand, this Arkham Asylum breakout and the complete and utter havoc it would wreak on Gotham would he a hell of an ender for the Christopher Nolan Batman trilogy. Also, considering that an image of Bane was the last nugget of TDKR intel, this could be for real. Bane did instigate a breakout in one Batman storyline. EW attempted to get some word from WB, but they were unwilling to comment "at this time." And the plot thickens.
Perhaps they don't plan on commenting because it's all part of the plan? Or perhaps they're just enjoying the buzz this clever ruse is creating for their already ridiculously highly-anticipated film. Either way, it's an interesting tease and it only serves to dish up heaps more of the feverish anticipation most of us are already struggling with.
