A pitch-perfect marketing campaign by Warner Brothers and a great release date enabled Watchmen to post some very impressive numbers.

With Thursday midnight preview grosses of $4.6 million (the film also sold out all 124 of those midnight shows that were in IMAX), the film earned a total of $25.135 million on Friday, which screenings starting at 12:01 a.m., and thus a huge weekend is assured for the R-rated comic-book adaptation.

Zack Snyder who also directed the massively huge March 2007 hit 300 ($70.9 million, the biggest March opening weekend ever, $210.6 domestic gross) has taken the comic book superhero movie to an entirely new level both visually and viscerally.

With an incredible cast of flawed super-heroes, an opening credits sequence that leaves you breathless and a sensibility that defies description, “Watchmen” is a truly unique, not-to-be-missed movie-going experience.

The soundtrack alone is worth the price of admission with songs from Jimi Hendrix, Leonard Cohen, Nat King Cole and Bob Dylan sprinkled throughout the movie. A visual tour-de-force, the film establishes Snyder as one of the most important filmmakers working in Hollywood today.
