HOLLYWOOD - Movie mogul Harvey Weinstein is considering legal action against NBC after they rejected an advertisement for a documentary about the Dixie Chicks' criticism of President George W. Bush.
The country trio hit the headlines in 2003 when singer Natalie Maines said she was "ashamed" Bush came from their home state Texas while on stage in London.
The film, entitled Shut Up & Sing, follows the “Wide Open Spaces” hitmakers from their London gig to the release of their latest album, Taking the Long Way.
Distributors Weinstein Co. claim NBC refused to run the ads, saying, "(We) cannot accept these spots as they are disparaging to President Bush."
Weinstein says, "It's a sad commentary about the level of fear in our society that a movie about a group of courageous entertainers who were blacklisted for exercising their right of free speech is now itself being blacklisted by corporate America.
"The idea that anyone should be penalized for criticizing the president is profoundly un-American."
The Weinstein Co. also claims the CW network also refused, saying, "We do not have appropriate programming in which to schedule this spot."
However, a CW representative says, "The spot was not declined. In fact, we were told they were not going to make a national spot buy on CW."
