Well, actually, we were hoping for The Karate Kid III, with Ralph Macchio as an old codger who teaches the martial arts to his bullied grandson. But this will have to do.

Will Smith’s 10-year-old son Jaden Smith is set to star in a sort-of redo of 1984's The Karate Kid. Set to shoot in Beijing and other cities next year, according to Variety, it will not be an exact duplicate but borrow elements from the original plot wherein a youth learns to stand up for himself with the help of eccentric mentor Pat Morita.

Jaden made his feature debut alongside his dad in The Pursuit of Happyness. He next appears in The Day the Earth Stood Still.

Macchio was already in his 20s when he took on the role in the John Avildsen-directed Kid. The much-younger Smith is said to be schooled in the martial arts.
