HOLLYWOOD - TV star William Shatner has sent a heartfelt letter to Louisiana GovernorKathleen Babineaux Blanco, urging her to what she can to save the pets still
struggling to survive in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
The Star Trek star has teamed up with animal activists at People or the
Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) to make sure the politician doesn't forget
man's best friends as relief workers continue to clean up New Orleans,
Louisiana.
In the letter, Shatner asks Governor Blanco to use her power to provide the
Louisiana National Guard with food and water for animals in the state that
continue to die in the aftermath of Katrina.
He writes, "My heart goes out to you and your fellow Louisianans during this
devastating chapter in your state's history. This is an urgent plea.
"People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has more than 850,000
members and supporters and, on their behalf, I respectfully request your
immediate attention.
"Your beleaguered constituents deserve better than to have their animals left
to die slowly in the wreckage of their battered state, and nonprofit agencies
cannot be expected to bear alone the immense work and cost of saving
Louisiana's animals!
"Governor, you have the power to provide the Louisiana National Guard with
food and water for these dying animals and to order that agency to notify
animal rescuers when it finds animals. Won't you please take this lifesaving
action today?"

Meanwhile, movie star Susan Sarandon is teaming up with the 'Death Row angel' she
portrayed in hit movie Dead Man Walking in a desperate effort to relocate the
children left homeless by Hurricane Katrina.
The actress got in touch with Louisiana-based Sister Helen Prejean before the
August storm ripped through the Gulf Coast and devastated areas of
Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana--to make sure the nun was OK.
And now the Thelma & Louise star and the woman she portrayed on film are
working together to make sure children they met while making Dead Man Walking
are safe and rehoused.
Sarandon says, "I'm meeting with the church down there [Louisiana]. I'm in
touch with Sister Helen and she's been telling us of the places that need
help.
"We reached out to the people we knew that were displaced, some of the kids
from Dead Man Walking that were from Louisiana. We're keeping tabs on them."
