Box Office Analysis, April 4: "Sin City" Looms in the Top Spot

Something wicked this way comes.

The dark, gritty and highly stylized Sin City, an graphic-novel adaptation from creator Frank Miller and director Robert Rodriguez, opened at No. 1 with $28.1 million, while the hairdressin' comedy Beauty Shop, starring Queen Latifah, debuted in second place with $13.5 million.

Sin City now stands as the third best April opener ever, behind Anger Management, which opened in 2003 with $42.2 million and The Scorpion King, which opened in 2002 with $36 million.

Costing about $40 million to make, Sin City grossed nearly three-fourths of its production budget in just the first weekend, putting the movie on the fast track to profitability. "That's the genius of Robert Rodriguez," Josh Greenstein, head of marketing for Dimension Films told The Associated Press. "His way of working is very cost-effective."

This weekend, the Top 12 films grossed an estimated $98.2 million, up 9.96 percent from last weekend's $89.3 million take but down 14.02 percent from this time last year's draw of $114.3 million.

The Top Three films at the box office this time last year were: Sony Pictures' PG-13 rated Hellboy, which opened at No. 1 with $23.1 million in 3,028 theaters, averaging $7,653 per theater; MGM PG-13 rated Walking Tall, which debuted in second place with $15.5 million in 2,836 theaters, averaging $5,466 per theater; and Warner Bros.' PG-rated Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, which dropped to third place in its fifth week with $12.5 million in 3,214 theaters, averaging $3,918 per theater.
