EXPANSIONS There was no activity on the expansion front this weekend.

WEEKEND COMPARISONS Key films -- those grossing more than $500,000 for the weekend -- took in approximately $124.79 million for three days. Valid comparisons to the comparable weekend last year aren't really possible because July Fourth fell on a Sunday last year and was part of a four-day weekend (July 2-5). Key films grossed $160.4 million for the four days last year.

The three-day gross for last year's four-day July Fourth weekend was approximately $125.5 million. Looking at that total, this year's July Fourth weekend is down by only a marginal 0.58 percent.

This weekend's key film gross was up about 23.93 percent from this year's previous weekend when key films grossed $100.69 million.

Last year, Warner Bros.' opening week of "Wild Wild West" was first with $36.43 million for four days and a six-day cume of $49.71 million at 3,342 theaters ($10,902 per theater); and Sony's second week of "Big Daddy" was second with $26.83 million at 3,121 theaters ($8,597 per theater). The top two films one year ago grossed $63.2 million for four days. This year, the top two films grossed an estimated $63.4 million for three days.

STUDIO MARKET SHARES Based on business by key films (those grossing $500,000 or more), last weekend's top six distributors were:
