Box Office Analysis, Nov. 14: ‘Chicken Little’ Strikes Again

Family movies prove to be box office gold.

Chicken Little stayed in the top spot for a second week in a row with another succulent $32 million, while the Jumanji-esque space flick Zathura debuted in second place with $14 million.

"History proves there's room for several of these family-type films. This is the perfect time of year for it," Rory Bruer, Sony head of distribution, told The Associated Press.

The other newcomers this week didn’t fare quite as well. The R-rated thriller Derailed, in which Jennifer Aniston sheds her Friend-ly image as a married woman who has an affair with Clive Owen, opened in third place with $12.8 million. Get Rich or Die Tryin', rapper 50 Cent’s first foray into feature films, fought for fourth with $12.5 million--despite opening on Wednesday.

Also debuting in the top 10 was Keira Knightley's Pride and Prejudice, a new take on Jane Austen's 19th century classic of romance and class conflict. The film came in at No. 10 with $2.8 million but only opened in 215 theaters, giving it the biggest per theater average of $13,043.

The box office slump continued but prognosticators are pinning all their hopes on next Harry Potter installment, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, which opens this week. "This is one of those save-the-day kinds of movies," Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Exhibitor Relations, told AP. "There were lines around the block for the latest book, The Half-Blood Prince. I expect no different for this Harry Potter movie."

The Top 12 films grossed an estimated a four-day total of $114.7 million, down 14.56 percent from last year's draw of $134.2 million and down 4.08 percent from last weekend's $119.5 million.

The Top Three films at the box office this time last year were: Buena Vista/Pixar’s PG rated The Incredibles, which stayed at No. 1 in its second week with $50.2 million in 3,933 theaters, averaging $12,777 per theater; Warner Bros. G-rated The Polar Express, which opened in second place with $23.3 million in 3,650 theaters, averaging $6,390 per theater; and New Line’s PG-13 After the Sunset, which opened in third place with $11.1 million in 2,819 theaters, averaging $3,938 per theater.
