It was neck in neck in the box office race this New Year’s weekend.

Jockeying for the top two positions over the last three weeks, the fantasy epic The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe gained the advantage against reigning champ King Kong, with a four-day total of $32.8 million. The 8,000 pound gorilla came in a close second with $31.6 million.

Comedies Fun with Dick and Jane and Cheaper by the Dozen 2 held onto their third and fourth spots for the second week with $21 and $19.3 million, respectively.

The real success story this weekend belongs to Steven Spielberg’s drama Munich, which despite only playing in 532 theaters, managed to come in tenth place. Its per theater average of $11,466 was the largest on the list.

The Top 12 films grossed an estimated $130 million, up 5.03 percent from last year's draw of $123.8 million and up 29.10 percent from last weekend’s total of $100.7 million.

The Top Three films at the box office this time last year were: Universal’s PG-13 Meet the Fockers, which stayed at No. 1 for the second week with $41.7 million in 3,524 theaters, averaging $11,845 per theater; Paramount Pictures’ PG-rated Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, which stayed in second place in its third week with $14.5 million in 3,623 theaters, averaging $4,026 per theater; and Miramax’s PG-13 The Aviator, which moved up to third place in its second week with $11.3 million in 1,796 theaters, averaging $6,328 per theater.
