The animated sequel Ice Age: The Meltdown opened huge at the North American box office, grossing a whopping $70.5 million over the weekend. Meltdown now also stands as the largest March opener ever and the second biggest animated debut, behind Shrek 2, which premiered in 2004 with $108 million.

"No one had any idea it would do this kind of business," Exhibitor Relations' Paul Dergarabedian, who expected the Ice Age sequel to debut in the $55 million range, told The Associated Pres. "The notion that people don't want to go to the movies is dispelled by something like this. It proves people will line up for the right movie if given the motivation."

As far as the other openers this weekend, third place went to the musical drama ATL, starring rapper Tip Harris, which took in $12.5 million; the horror-comedy Slither came in eighth place with $3.7 million; and Basic Instinct 2, the belated sequel to the 1992 sex thriller starring Sharon Stone, tanked at No. 10 with $3.2 million.

The Top 12 films this week grossed an estimated $136.4 million, up 39.55 percent from last weekend’s total of $97.8 million and up 39.88 percent from last year's draw of $97.5 million.
