In a real-life déjà vu, Happy Feet and Casino Royale held onto the top two spots at the North American box office over the Thanksgiving weekend. The delightful animated penguin musical took in a five-day total of $51.5 million, while the James Bond actioner grossed $45.1 million.

Meanwhile, Denzel Washington’s sci-fi thriller Deja Vu and the Christmas comedy Deck the Halls, which both opened on Wednesday, took the third and fourth spot, respectively. Deja Vu opened with a five-day total of $29 million, while Deck the Halls, starring Matthew Broderick and Danny DeVito, debuted with $16.9 million.

Other newcomers failed to make a mark. Darren Aronofsky’s fantastical The Fountain only managed tenth place with $3.7 million. Tenacious D in: the Pick of Destiny, with Jack Black and musical partner Kyle Gass in a spoof of how their folk-rock duo came to be, opened at No. 11 with $3.3 million. In a wider release, Emilio Estevez’s RFK saga Bobby made the charts in the ninth spot with $6 million.

The Top 12 movies grossed $208 million over the five-day Thanksgiving weekend, down 3.41 percent from last year’s draw of $215.4 million. But the three-day total of $148.5 were up 11.45 percent from last weekend’s total of $133.2 million.

The Top Three films at the box office this time last year were: Warner Bros. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, which stayed at No. 1 for its second week of release with $81.2 million in 3,858 theaters, averaging $14,185 per theater; 20th Century Fox’s Walk the Line, which stayed in second place in its second week with $26.8 million in 3,138 theaters, averaging $6,122 per theater; and Paramount’s Yours, Mine and Ours, which opened in third place with $24.3 million in 3,206 theaters, averaging $5,446 per theater (Click here to read last year's box office report).
