Box Office Analysis, Jan. 15: 'Yard' Stomps Its Way to Top

The new dance flick Stomp the Yard usurped reigning champ Night at the Museum at the North American box office this weekend, debuting in the top spot with $22 million. Museum, meanwhile, slipped to second with $17.1 million.

The Associated Press reports a strong turnout by black moviegoers, who accounted for nearly two-thirds of the audience, propelled Stomp the Yard over the top. The movie followed in the footsteps of other black-themed films that debuted at No. 1 over previous Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekends, including Glory Road last year and Coach Carter in 2005.

"Sony picked a great weekend to release the film," Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Media By Numbers told AP. "The urban audience wields a lot of clout at the box office. If you put a film in the marketplace that has that built-in appeal to that audience, look at the numbers. The numbers speak for themselves."

The weekend's other new movies didn’t fare as well. The slacker drama Alpha Dog starring Justin Timberlake opened in seventh place with $6.1 million, while the horror flick Primeval premiered in eighth with $6 million. And finally expanding to a nationwide release, the live-action/animated family film Arthur and the Invisibles debuted in ninth with $4.3 million.

The Top 12 movies grossed $97.1 million over the weekend, down 4.70 percent from last year’s draw of $101.9 million and down 6.99 percent from last weekend’s total of $104.4 million.

The Top Three films at the box office this time last year were: Buena Vista’s Glory Road, which opened at No. 1 with $13.5 million in 2,222 theaters, averaging $7,618 per theater; Weinstein Co.’s Hoodwinked, which opened in second place with $12.4 million in 2,394 theaters, averaging $7,051 per theater; and Paramount’s Last Holiday, which opened in third place with $12.8 million in 2,514 theaters, averaging $6,169 per theater (Click here to read last year's box office report).
