The North American box office took a new turn this weekend, with teen-thriller Disturbia debuting at the top with $23 million.

Disturbia stars up-and-comer Shia LaBeouf, whose long-rumored casting in the fourth Indiana Jones movie was confirmed Friday by producer George Lucas and director Steven Spielberg, as a teenager under house arrest who suspects one of his neighbors as a serial killer. LaBeouf also provides the lead voice for Sony's upcoming animated penguin comedy Surf's Up and stars in the science-fiction saga Transformers.

"The person you want to be right now is Shia LaBeouf. I want to be Shia LaBeouf. I want to be 20 and have all this happening to me. It's really great for him," Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Media By Numbers told The Associated Press. "2007 is Shia's year. He proved he can open a movie all by himself."

Other newcomers to the top 10 list included: The psychological thriller Perfect Stranger, starring Halle Berry and Bruce Willis, which opened in fourth place with $11.5 million, while the Viking actioner Pathfinder debuted in sixth with $4.8 million.

There was also a few openers that didn’t make it to the list. The adrenaline-packed Redline debuted at No. 11 with $4 million, while the animated Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters, a big-screen adaptation of the cult TV cartoon, opened $3.1 million. The crime thriller Slow Burn, starring Ray Liotta flopped with just $800,000. In limited release, the comic drama Year of the Dog opened with a strong $112,346 in seven theaters.

The Top 12 movies grossed $99.5 million over the weekend, down 9.41 percent from last year’s draw of $109.8 million and down 9.66 percent from last weekend’s total of $110.1 million.

The Top Three films at the box office this time last year were: Weinstein Co.’s Scary Movie 4, which opened at No. 1 with $40.2 million in 3,602 theaters, averaging $11,167 per theater; 20th Century Fox’s Ice Age: The Meltdown, which dropped to second place in its third week of release with $20 million in 3,873 theaters, averaging $5,171 per theater; and Sony’s The Benchwarmers, which dropped to third place in its second week with $9.9 million in 3,282 theaters, averaging $3,021 per theater.
