Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End’s numbers may have dipped, but the third installment in the popular franchise still managed to take the top spot at the North American box office this weekend with $43.1 million.

"It's exactly where I expected it," Chuck Viane, head of distribution for Disney told The Associated Press. "Once you get everybody who is that avid, crazy fan that's going to see it the first week, then you rely on people who never go out the first week and the people who just come back and back and back."

Meanwhile, writer/director Judd Apatow’s new romantic comedy Knocked Up, made an impressive debut, coming in second place with $29.3 million. The movie's weekend gross equaled its entire production budget, according to AP.

"It looks like a lot of people wanted to get knocked up this weekend," Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Media By Numbers told AP.

The psychological thriller Mr. Brooks, starring Kevin Costner as a serial killer, opened in fourth place with $10 million, while the sports tale Gracie, featuring Elisabeth Shue in a film inspired by tragic events in her own life and her teenage days as the only girl on a boys soccer team, debuted in seventh with $1.4 million.

The Top 12 movies took in $124.6 million, down 3.48 percent from last year’s total of $129.1 million and down 37.41 percent from last weekend’s total of $199.2 million. The Top Three films at the box office this time last year were: Universal’s The Break Up, which opened at No. 1 with $39.1 million in 3,070 theaters, averaging $12,760 per theater; 20th Century Fox’s X-Men: The Last Stand, which dropped to second place in its second week of release with $34 million in 3,714 theaters, averaging $9,159 per theater; and DreamWorks' Over the Hedge, which stayed in third place in its third week with $20.6 million in 3,993 theaters, averaging $5,171 per theater.
