The spoofs have it. Meet the Spartans--a comedy in the vein of the Scary Movies that makes fun of everything, including the epic hit 300 and Britney Spears--opened at the top of the North American box office this weekend with $18.7 million.

Meet the Spartans was nearly beat by Sylvester Stallone’s Rambo, however, which debuted in second place with a close $18.1 million. The fourth installment in the 20-year-old franchise now stands as the second best in the series, following Rambo: First Blood Part II, which opened in 1985 with $20.1 million.

"This was a very tight race for the No. 1 spot," Paul Dergarabedian, president of box office tracker Media By Numbers told The Associated Press. "I think we tend to underestimate films like Meet the Spartans. Fox has really locked onto something that's extremely popular."

Rounding out the other newcomers this weekend were the cyber thriller Untraceable, which premiered in fifth place with $11.2 million, and the step-dance movie How She Move, which failed to make the top 10, grossing $4.1 million.

The Top 12 movies took in $117.8 million, up 32.12 percent from last year’s $89.1 million on the same weekend last year but down 10.86 percent from last weekend’s total of $132.1 million.

The Top Three films at the box office this time last year: Fox’s Epic Movie, which opened at No. 1 with $18.6 million in 2,801 theaters, averaging $6,645 per theater; Universal’s Smokin' Aces, which debuted in second place with $14.6 million in 2,218 theaters, averaging $6,600 per theater; and Fox’s Night at the Museum, which dropped to third place in its seventh week of release with $9.5 million in 3,241 theaters, averaging $2,949 per theater (Click here to read last year's box office report).
