Hollywood.com’s box office division reports that Summit Entertainment’s “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 1” scores big as audiences give the film an estimated debut of around $72 million on Friday – This is virtually in a dead heat with the second biggest single-day gross in box office history currently held by “Twilight Saga: New Moon” and its $72.7 million debut. Impressively, three of the top five single-day grosses are now held by “Twilight” films and primarily drive by teen girls who obviously wield tremendous box office clout. The top single-day earner is Warner Bros. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” with $91.1 million on its debut Friday.

The $72 million estimate includes $30.25 million in midnight screening revenues (the second biggest midnight screening total ever) that started at 12:01am on Friday.

A total weekend gross of between $135 to $140 million is expected for “Breaking Dawn, Part 1” and this latest installment will easily propel the franchise to over $2 billion in worldwide revenues. Notably this will be only the second film so far this year to open with over $100 million (the other being Warner Bros. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” with $169.2 million.)

This first day gross shows the enduring appeal and seemingly insatiable appetite that its fans (and in particular teen girls) have for the vampire and werewolf saga.
