A British contestant who won £1 million ($1.46 million) on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire has contradicted reports that he may have cheated.
On Wednesday, Scotland Yard confirmed that it was investigating reports that the contestant, Major Charles Ingram, may have been helped by a friend coughing in the audience.
"I wish I knew what was going on," Ingram told today's (Friday) London Daily Telegraph. "I have no idea why they are investigating me. I don't know what there is to investigate."
The Millionaire program featuring Ingram's win was pulled pending the results of the police investigation. A statement issued by Ingram's lawyers on Thursday said: "He is stunned, bewildered and devastated at the action that has been taken and feels that the effects will leave his career in the Army and livelihood in tatters. In the circumstances Mr Ingram has stated that he will do all in his power to protect his legal position and restore his reputation."
