A prince less ardent

Oct 23, 2001 | 10:17am EDT

Britain's Prince Edward has reportedly agreed to stop producing films about royalty for his Ardent productions following what was described as a battle royal between him and his mother, Queen Elizabeth, and his brother, Prince Charles, over a film he was making about Prince William, his nephew.

Prince Edward, who is also the Earl of Wessex, was strongly criticized in the press for breaching an agreement not to intrude on the prince's life at St. Andrews University in Scotland.

Last week, it was also revealed that in 1996 he had written a letter to a producer planning a TV film about royalty and horse racing in which he sought to enhance his role in the production: "I am the key to this project," he wrote. "No private finance could be even considered without my name being attached."
