Veteran ABC-News reporter Carole Simpson suspended

Oct 25, 2001 | 1:07pm EDT

ABC News has suspended veteran reporter/anchor/commentator Carole Simpson for two weeks following remarks she made to the International Women's Media Foundation on Oct. 16 concerning the anthrax attacks on media targets, USA Today reported today.

According to the newspaper, Simpson, who is president of the IWMF, said during her remarks that ABC's Cokie Roberts had received a letter postmarked Trenton, NJ at her office in Washington DC.

In fact, USA Today reported, no such letter existed.

Ironically, Simpson made her remarks in conjunction with the presentation of her organization's Courage in Journalism awards, during which she also warned of the dangers of self-censorship during the current crisis.
